Life hack for the outdoors- plan ahead to avoid an unwelcome run in with a bear. When it comes to keeping bears at a safe distance from camp and food rations, there a two primary options: hanging your food or using a bear canister. Below is a list of some of the pros and cons of each method of storing food safely in the backcountry.
Using a bag to hang food in bear country has a few obvious benefits. Mostly, the lightweight and more cost effective option of food storage is to hang food (as well as other attractive smelling items such as deodorant or toothpaste). You’ll need a waterproof bag to store food and at least 50 feet of rope or cord long enough to stretch over an extended tree branch or hang post.
In some parks known for aggressive bears or in other areas with little or no trees, hanging food may not be an option. Be sure to research requirements for food storage prior to the start of your trip.
Pros: Rope and bag take up minimal weight and space, no special equipment needed
Cons: Not an option when tall trees aren’t available, can be time consuming, takes practice, some bears can figure out how to get into your hanging food bag, food gets wet if not stored in dry bag, food not easily accessible if you want a snack
Bear canisters are thick, almost impenetrable plastic containers designed to be nearly impossible for bears (and some humans) to open. Many parks require all campers to store and protect food in bear canisters rather than hanging food.
Pros: Easy to use, large canisters can double as camp stool, required in some parks, considered more bear-resistant than hanging
Cons: Can be expensive, Large and heavy, bulky, not easy to pack
